Recent articles in Fit for Life in EMS have detailed many options for increasing one's fitness level both on and off the job. Even though many of the options presented are affordable for many, your wallet needs a break every now and then. Here are some additional tips to help support a fitness incentive on a small budget.

Eating Right

Most people don't mind spending a few extra dollars on a slab of beef or a large ham, but the price of fruits and vegetables scares many people away from the produce aisle. First off, if you compare the prices, meat costs more than vegetables on a pound for pound comparison. If you're still frightened, look for fruits and vegetables in other places such as the frozen food section or the canned food aisle. Also, buy only in-season produce.

Are there any produce stands in your area? These are excellent places to buy in-season produce at decent prices. If there are any strawberry or blueberry fields in your area, maybe you should go pick some of your own fruit. I guarantee that spending a few hours picking strawberries will not only net you a cheaper price, but also give you a workout that will leave you sore for days.

Workout Equipment

If you've considered buying workout equipment, first look for alternative ideas. Instead of a stair climber, build a small set of two or three steps or just a step-up box. For an excellent all-around cardiovascular workout, buy a jump-rope for a few bucks.

If your service will allow it and your supervisor okays it, check out garage sales in your area for used equipment. Although the nice shiny sets look great in the store, you can often find a like- new piece of equipment for a tenth of the cost. If you can't find the equipment for sale, contact your local newspaper and see if they'll run a small story on your search for a gym. My agency did this and netted enough equipment to stock three station gyms at no cost.

Exercise Videos and DVDs

Instead of buying exercise videos or DVDs, consider renting them from video stores or buying previously viewed versions. A small library of videos can accumulate quickly and can be stored at headquarters for loan to various stations.

Gym Memberships

In most services, there is a scattering of college students. Many colleges provide gyms that are free or reduced cost for college students. Sometimes, the students can take guests with them for trial periods or at a reduced rate.

The provider service can also check with local gyms to see if they offer a corporate rate. The local gym in my area offers the corporate rate for five or more members.

It doesn't have to cost you a lot of money to get into shape. Before you spend anything, research all your options. It may take longer to get a full gym equipped or get the fitness program rolling, but it will save money for individuals and provider services.
