Lenoir Community College Proves Good Fit for Students

There might be bigger and better-known EMS programs in the country, but students at Lenoir Community College in Lenoir, NC, will match their school’s program against any of them.
Jordan Goodman, an EMT-Intermediate who is working on her paramedic certification, can list a number of reasons why Lenoir is such a good fit for her. “One of the things I love most is that the teachers at Lenoir are very down to earth and are always willing to give one-on-one help to anyone who needs it,” she says. “But I also love the technology that’s available to us. We have a manikin called Sim Man, who has a pulse, can cry, see and talk, and you can take his blood pressure, among endless other features. It makes everything we do seem like real life.”
Goodman will graduate in May with the first class to go through the new curriculum. “At the end of the class, we’ll now get both a 2-year degree in Emergency Medical Sciences and our paramedic certification,” she says. “I really want to be a physician assistant, but I had to get started somewhere, and I got into the paramedic program at Lenoir and absolutely fell in love with it.”
Although small, LCC has a great reputation and serves students from all over the country, says Goodman. “We also have online classes, where students can come in on weekends to work on skills, or we have seated classes. Another great thing about our school is that students are given an opportunity for experiences outside the classroom. “They let East Care fly in with a helicopter one day and we got to practice loading a stretcher on and off,” she says. “We also went to Charlotte to see their EMS agency and see what it’s like to work in a larger system. All of the special activities help us learn just a little bit more.”
