City Guide in Brief
Chicago
Visitors to Chicago may only know the thriving metropolis by its popular nickname, “The Windy City.” However, Chicago is celebrated for much more than its notorious gusts. Visitors might be surprised to learn that besides its city skyline, which represents more than 2.7 million residents, Chicago encompasses 26 miles of lakefront, 15 miles of beach, and hundreds of parks. While you’re in town for the American Diabetes Association 73rd Scientific Sessions, be sure to experience the best of Chicago’s cityscape and natural sanctuaries. We’ve highlighted a few must-see attractions below. For additional points of interest, visit Chicago’s official visitors’ Website at www.choosechicago.com.
The beauties of art, architecture, and nature intersect at the crossroads of Millennium Park. Considered by most as the heart of the city, this 25-acre hub includes numerous attractions in itself, including the Crown Fountain, a reflecting pool bordered by two 50-foot towers that project images of Chicago citizens’ faces; the Harris Theater, which houses Chicago’s world-renowned music and dance companies; and BP Bridge, a stainless steel bridge designed by architect Frank Gehry as a sound barrier between the performance theater and street traffic. The park also serves as a backdrop to numerous free events, including concerts, exhibitions, and family activities. For park hours and a list of upcoming events, visit www.millenniumpark.org.
This year, the Museum of Science and Industry celebrates its 80th anniversary with a special exhibition showcasing its most fascinating and rarely displayed artifacts. Located at East 57th Street and Lake Shore Drive, the museum is the largest science museum in the Western hemisphere. Among its many hands-on, larger-than-life exhibits, visitors should not miss Animals Inside Out, an exhibit that shows the intricate biology and physiology of some of the world’s most spectacular creatures. Other exhibits explore the science and technology behind genetics, the Internet, space discovery, maritime history, agriculture, and much more. The museum is open daily from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm. General admission is $18 for adults. Visit www.msichicago.org for more information.
