American Geriatrics Society 2013 Annual Scientific Meeting

Gaylord Texan Hotel and Convention Center

Grapevine, TX

Grapevine

Located within the Dallas/Fort Worth area, Grapevine, TX, is aptly named for the native grapes prevalent in the area. The city emerged in 1843 when General Sam Houston met with the leaders of 10 Native American nations to sign a peace treaty, which allowed homesteaders to settle onto their land. The city’s unique combination of historical districts, cultural activities, and, of course, famed wineries are among the reasons why Grapevine was voted one of “America’s Best Places to Live” in 2007. While you’re in town for the American Geriatrics Society’s Annual Scientific Meeting, be sure to experience the area and find out for yourself why Grapevine earned such an honor. We’ve highlighted a few attractions below. Learn more at Grapevine’s official visitors’ Website at www.grapevinetexasusa.com

If you’re looking for a way to cool off during your stay in Texas, you won’t have to travel far, as Paradise Springs, the Top Aquatic Resort in 2011, is located right inside the Gaylord Texan Hotel. This 10-acre, Western-themed water resort has something for everyone. The complex includes a long and winding lazy river for those who want to relax as well as a 27-foot-tall winding waterslide in the family lagoon for those who want to splash around. With a poolside bar and grill and sun decks, the 10-minute bus ride from the lobby is definitely worth the trip. For more information about Paradise Springs and the other amenities within the Gaylord Texan, visit https://bit.ly/GaylordTexan

As the name of the town implies, local wineries are abundant in Grapevine. While there are far too many wineries to visit them all in one trip, Grapevine Wine Tours offers you the opportunity to visit as many as possible. The Grapevine Wine Tours offers two daily tours: a lunch tour and a dinner tour. Every tour stops at three out of the 14 wineries offered through the company. Tour itineraries rotate daily, so each tour is a new and exciting experience. For ticketing and tour information, visit www.grapevinewinetours.com.

After you tour a few local wineries, be sure to pick up a bottle to bring with you to Café Italia, one of the best BYOB restaurants in town. Located at 2647 Ira E. Woods Avenue, Café Italia is an upscale yet affordable fine restaurant serving Italian cuisine, seafood, and steaks for lunch and dinner. The warm and inviting atmosphere is wonderfully matched by the delicious food and professional wait staff. From simple manicotti to salmon oreganata, there is something to satisfy every palate. For reservation information, call (817) 251-0999 or visit www.cafeitaliagrapevine.com.
