Evaluation of a Cyanoacrylate Liquid Skin Protectant for the Treatment of Incontinence Associated Dermatitis and Intertrigo

Introduction: Skin can be compromised by moisture-associated skin damage (MASD), intertrigo (skin rash), and incontinence associated dermatitis (IAD).1 In a large patient survey in the US and Canada, nearly 1 in 5 incontinent patients had documented IAD.2 Failure to resolve these skin conditions have been correlated to a decrease in quality of life (QOL).3

Objective: Evaluate a cyanoacrylate liquid skin protectant (CLKP) for the healing of IAD and intertrigo and improvement in patients QOL.

Method: Four patients were evaluated in this study. Case 1; a 73 year old with cervical cancer and acute IAD. Case 2; a 38 week old infant with neonatal abstinence syndrome previously treated with a zinc barrier without affect. Case 3; a 71 year old with IAD caused by clostridium difficile infection, poor sphincter control and anal tone. Case 4; an 84 year old with multiple comorbidities and intertrigo of skin folds of the abdomen.

All patients received 1-2 applications of CLKP. Results: Case 1; complete healing was observed at day 7 post-CLKP with patient reporting much relief from burning symptoms and significantly improved QOL. Case 2; complete healing was observed at day 10 post-CLKP. Case 3; at day 5 post-CLPK, IAD was reduced and patient reported less pain and better overall comfort. Case 4; complete intertrigo healing was observed at day 8 post-CLKP without an observable rash.

Conclusion: In these 4 cases, CLKP proved to be an effective treatment for IAD and intertrigo. Complete healing was observed at 5-8 days with patients reporting improved QOL.
