SNS Nanofiber Technology Produces Nanostructured Nonwoven Matrix

SNS NanoFiber Technology (Uniontown, Ohio) formed through the partnership of Struktol Company of America (Stow, Ohio) and the University of Akron (Akron, Ohio) started production of Nanosan®, a nanostructured nonwoven. What differentiates Nanosan from other nano nonwovens is the incorporation of particles into the nanofiber matrix. The use of proprietary technology allows various types of particles or additives to be either entrapped in the nanofiber matrix or encapsulated within the nanofibers. By varying the type of polymer nanofiber as well as the additive, virtually any characteristic can be achieved. Nanosan nonwovens are suitable for many applications and can be produced in larger quantities at a substantially lower cost than conventional nanofibers—making it the first commercially viable material of its kind on the market. Gel Version of Oxycyte® Created To Treat Surface Wounds and Burns

Oxygen Biotherapeutics Inc (Costa Mesa, Calif) developed a gel-like form of Oxycyte® that the company intends to investigate as a topical application for open wounds, abrasions, and burns. Oxycyte is the company’s perfluocarbon (PFC) therapeutic oxygen carrier. Unlike the intravenous drug application of Oxycyte in traumatic brain injury, this version would be directly applied to the skin or the wound surface. The innovation is based on technologies in-licensed earlier this year from Virginia Commonwealth University. In addition to a hydrogen peroxide pouch, researchers believe the compound could have superior abilities to deliver a high concentration of oxygen directly to the wounded tissue. The combination of Oxycyte gel and H2O2 is believed to be the key to its possible efficacy. Oxygen Biotherapeutics intends to submit a protocol for a proposed clinical investigation to the US Food and Drug Administration before the end of 2008. Visit www.oxybiomed.com for more information.
