Silver NPWT dressing adds effective antimicrobial barrier

Kinetic Concepts Inc. (San Antonio, Tex.) announces the introduction of its V.A.C.® GranuFoam® Silver™ Dressing into the wound care market. Designed specifically for the V.A.C.® Therapy System, the new dressing combines the proven benefits of negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) with the protective attributes of silver.

According to the company’s in vitro testing, dressing attributes include:
  • Direct and complete contact: the only silver dressing that allows the dressing pores to come in direct contact with the wound, eliminating the need for additional silver dressing layers that may inhibit negative pressure and granulation
  • Continuous delivery of silver directly to the wound bed: micro-bonded metallic silver is uniformly distributed throughout the dressing, providing continuous delivery of silver even after sizing
  • Ease-of-use: a single application eliminates the need for adjunct silver dressings
  • Effective protection: the dressing offers a protective barrier to reduce aerobic, Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, yeast, and fungi, and may help reduce infections in wounds.

Undergarment briefs help nourish and protect skin

Medline Industries Inc. (Mundelein, Ill.) announces the launch of Restore™ briefs treated with Remedy™ Skin Repair Cream, a new skin care treatment that nourishes and protects patients’ skin. The briefs were designed to help healthcare workers achieve compliance with the new Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines on preventing skin breakdown.

The skin cream product is applied to the entire length of the brief to help restore and maintain the skin’s natural balance while delivering vital nutrients to the skin.

Designed to provide maximum comfort and dryness, the briefs offer 100% breathable side panels on the front and back that improve airflow to keep residents comfortable and prevent irritation. Refastenable tape tabs with “grab-anywhere” technology create the best possible fit and allows caregivers to check a brief and easily refasten. Pressure-relieving heel protector addresses second most common pressure ulcer site

Sage Products (Cary, Ill.) has developed a new device to protect patients’ feet, especially heels and ankles, from excessive pressure, friction, and shearing. As part of a heel pressure ulcer prevention protocol, new Prevalon™ Pressure-Relieving Heel Protector provides effective pressure relief while helping prevent foot drop. To float the heel, the device elevates the foot and separates the heel from the mattress surface. This provides total pressure relief for the heel, while keeping it visible for easy monitoring between assessments. The device also has a unique foot-drop prevention feature to deliver maximum support to the bottom of the foot.

Ready for use out of the package, the product’s universal size adjusts easily to fit virtually any foot, right or left. Stretchable panel closures simplify donning and removal. They provide secure attachment without uncomfortable straps that can irritate or damage skin and their open-weave fabric breathes for improved air circulation. The product’s stretchable closure easily accommodates the tubing found in most deep vein thrombosis (DVT) compression devices.

The product’s built-in side supports protect the foot and ankle while keeping the foot in proper position. Pillow-style cushioning mimics a pillow’s effective pressure-reducing capabilities. An ultra-soft interior lining provides comfort while reducing foot movement within the device; this reduces potential for friction and shearing. The product’s pontoon bottom design helps stabilize the foot in an upright position and a low-friction exterior surface helps maintain freedom of movement against bed linens. The product is latex-free, made of washable fabric for easy cleaning, and the materials used in construction meet flammability standards.
