Hydrofiber wound dressing now available in US

ConvaTec’s (Skillman, NJ) AQUACEL® EXTRA™ wound dressing with strengthening fiber is now available in the United States. It is constructed with two-dimensional strengthening fibers stitched into the dressing. Although it is made from the same base material used to manufacture Hydrofiber® Technology, the strengthening fibers do not gel on contact with fluid, so they maintain their integrity and become encompassed by the gel, providing additional strength. The design makes it nine times stronger and increases absorbency 39% over the current AQUACEL® wound dressings. The new design also aids the easy removal from even the deepest wound beds. The new wound dressing will be specifically suitable when managing moderate to highly exuding wounds.   Dressings are available in three sizes: 2 inches x 2 inches (5 cm x 5 cm), 4 inches x 5 inches (10 cm x 12 cm) and 6 inches x 6 inches (15 cm x 15 cm).

Antimicrobial hydrogel with silver introduced

Normlgel® Ag, the latest addition to Mölnlycke Health Care’s (Norcross, GA) antimicrobial dressing portfolio, is an antimicrobial hydrogel that contains a silver carbonate. This compound provides an effective barrier to bacterial penetration by inhibiting the growth of a broad spectrum of microorganisms that come into contact with the gel.

The product is effective in assisting the debridement and desloughing process in dry necrotic wounds, while maintaining a moist wound environment for optimal wound healing. It is indicated for the management of dry to moderate exuding partial- and full-thickness chronic and acute wounds.

One-piece ostomy barrier introduced

Inventor Gilbert L. Abrams and Urologist-in-Chief at Columbia University Medical Center Dr. Mitchell C. Benson have partnered with New York City entrepreneur and angel investor Owen W. Coleman to create The Benson Turtleneck Barrier LLC to market the ostomy barrier solution, the Benson TurtleneckTM Barrier.

The Benson Turtleneck Barrier is fabricated from a one-piece mold that secures without adhesive or glue in contact with the stoma. Abrams, who has 50 years of experience as a plastics product and mold engineer, initiated work on his invention to help a cousin with a stoma post colon cancer treatment. After seeing how well the product worked for his cousin, Abrams introduced Dr. Benson to his invention. Dr. Benson received positive feedback from his own patients, and lent his name to the product.

The team is planning to find a partner to bring this invention to the marketplace, potentially changing the landscape of the approximately $2 billion annual global ostomy market.

NAFC names most innovative new product

The National Association For Continence (NAFC) (Charleston, SC) presented the Most Innovative New Product award to Coloplast (Minneapolis, MN) for its new product, InterDry® Ag, a textile that helps reduce the risk of moisture-associated skin damage, most often diagnosed as intertriginous dermatitis (intertrigo).

As moisture accumulates and remains trapped within skin folds, bacteria, fungal, and viral growth inevitably lead to intertrigo, and even skin breakdown and subsequent ulceration. Obese patients, as well as those with contractures, are most vulnerable.

The award was announced in the 2011–2012 issue of DISCOVERIES®, a directory of the newest products and services for people living in the US with bladder and bowel control problems.

  For more information, visit www.us.coloplast.com.

In related news, The National Association For Continence (NAFC) (Charleston, SC) published DISCOVERIES as an e-book. The book can be viewed, free-of-charge, on the NAFC’s website. The book can be purchased through the NAFC’s online store. DISCOVERIES® is a companion and supplement to the Resource Guide®, an exclusive and complete directory of products and services for US residents living with incontinence and related pelvic floor dysfunction.

DISCOVERIES covers products released since publication of the latest Resource Guide. These products are commercially available, about to be launched, or represent a new technology whose product applications are yet defined but which have relevancy to this field. This is the fifth edition of DISCOVERIES.
