Silver-coated antimicrobial barrier dressing now available
Smith & Nephew Wound Management (Largo, FL) introduces ACTICOAT Site, a silver-coated antimicrobial barrier dressing. The dressing is specifically designed to help manage infection risks around IV lines, central venous catheters, and external fixation sites.
As the newest member of the family of silver-coated antimicrobial barrier dressings, this product is formulated with SILCRYST™ nanocrystalline (Ag+, Ag0) silver technology, which is the force behind its long-lasting bactericidal properties. The dressing provides bactericidal activity against multiple strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and other pathogens. With its circular shape, slit, and central opening, the dressing can easily be placed around percutaneous insertion sites. In addition to providing excellent absorption, it can be left in place for up to 7 days for continuous antimicrobial activity throughout the entire wear time.

Company launches new negative pressure wound therapy system
Medela, Inc. (McHenry, IL) has launched the Invia® Healing System, a negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) system used to heal chronic and acute wounds. The new system’s infection-preventing dual mechanism includes antimicrobial properties and active drainage that control infection. The FDA-cleared system includes the Medela-manufactured Vario 18 AC/DC c/i aspirator pump that applies gentle negative pressure to the wound and an advanced wound dressing kit that controls infection and promotes healing of diabetic, neuropathic, pressure, chronic, acute, and dehisced wounds.
Unlike most negative pressure wound therapy systems that use foam to dress the wound, this system includes an antimicrobial gauze-based dressing designed to stop infection before it starts. The easy application minimizes nursing time and patient discomfort and expedites the healing process.

Licensing agreement reached
Derma Sciences, Inc. (Princeton, NJ) has obtained a licensing agreement with C-Boot LTD, a medical biosystems company based in Israel.
The agreement was established for the marketing, sales, and distribution rights of C-Boot’s patented advanced therapeutic devices for the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency, venous ulcers, and lymphedema; deep vein thrombosis prevention; and other conditions that require compression therapy.
Derma Sciences will market C-Boot’s products under the MOBILITY 1™ brand. The products are the world’s first and only intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) therapy devices for all these indications, allowing full patient mobility. Several US patents cover the technologies inherent within the device.
Until now, IPC therapy has required that the patient remain immobile while connected to a large pneumatic compressor. Ambulatory treatments have been limited to compression wraps and stockings that have decreased patient compliance, are painful, and do not provide optimal therapy.
This system can be activated either by kinetic energy created from the patient walking (fully utilizing the patient’s calf muscle pump) or by a small, portable compressor.
Patients now will be able to maintain their regular lifestyle by taking therapy wherever they go. The products are easy to wear and use.
