Postoperative antimicrobial barrier dressing manages risk infection

  Smith & Nephew Wound Management (Largo, FL) introduces ACTICOAT® Post-Op, a silver-coated antimicrobial barrier dressing designed to help manage infection risk following cardiothoracic, orthopedic, soft tissue, and other surgical procedures.

  The dressing is a part of the trilaminate dressing family and consists of a proprietary perforated nanocrystalline silver (SILCRYST™) wound contact layer, an absorbent hydrocellular foam layer, and a transparent waterproof adhesive top film. The dressing protects against exogenous and endogenous bacterial infection and provides absorption for up to 7 days.

New device offers lower extremity mobility

  EHOB (Indianapolis, IN) introduces The FootHold, the latest addition to the line of WAFFLE Brand products specifically for lower extremities. It not only prevents and treats pressure ulcers, but also offers an optional splint and ambulation sole.

Antimicrobial mattress cover reduces threat of MRSA

  Gaymar Industries, Inc. (Orchard Park, NY), in conjunction with Dartex Coatings Limited (Slatersville, RI), and Smith & Nephew (London, England) Extruded Films, released a new antimicrobial mattress cover designed to reduce the presence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and other bacteria.

  The mattress cover utilizes a patented Silver3® technology that targets bacteria found on surfaces that come in contact with bodily fluids. Through ionic silver technology, the mattress cover disperses silver ions in response to humidity and moisture, reducing MRSA and other bacteria by 99.9%.

Manuka honey receives market clearance

  Derma Sciences, Inc. (Princeton, NJ) recently received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market and sell its API-MED™ Active Manuka Honey Absorbent Dressing.

  This represents the first FDA clearance of a honey-based product for the management of wounds and burns.

Topical antiseptic improves chronic nonhealing wounds

  Purdue Pharma’s (Stamford, CT) Betadine®, a topical broad-spectrum antiseptic povidine-iodine improves the majority of chronic non-healing wounds according to the chart review presented at the 82nd Annual Meeting of the Canadian Dermatology Association (CDA). The antiseptic’s broad-spectrum, residual antimicrobial activity and lower tissue toxicity proved to be more effective than most broad-spectrum agents.

Company produces acidic fibroblast growth factor
