Joe Sardano, CEO, Chairman, and Co-Founder, Sensus Healthcare

Please provide a short description of your background, training, and experience.

I’ve spent more than 30 years in health care management. I’ve successfully introduced and commercialized new technologies and services in many areas, including electronic brachytherapy, positron emission tomography (PET) and PET/computed tomography, single-photon emission computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, lithotripsy, and digital radiography. Before I started Sensus Healthcare, I held leadership and management roles at CTI Molecular Imaging (Knoxville, TN), GE Medical Systems (Chicago, IL), Siemens Medical Systems (Malvern, PA), Elscint Inc (Hackensack, NJ), and Toshiba America Medical Systems (Glen Mills, PA), among others.

What should readers know about your company?

Sensus Healthcare is a medical technology company that is committed to providing noninvasive and cost-effective treatment for nonmelanoma skin cancers, keloids, and other aesthetic indications to patients all over the world. Our mission is to offer a wide range of aesthetic and clinical solutions to patients, not only to treat skin cancer but also to help people look and feel their best from head to toe.

Our devices use a proprietary low-energy photon radiotherapy known as superficial radiation technology (SRT), which had more than decade of dedicated research and development put into its creation. To date, SRT has been used to effectively and safely treat oncological and nononcological skin conditions in thousands of patients.

For wounds specifically, SRT can treat keloids, which aresmooth, hard, benign growths of scar tissue that go beyond the original wound and can have recurrence rates of up to 45% to 100%. Too few patients are aware of this issue and their risks. Keloids severely affect quality of life and are sources of frustration for patients because they are difficult to permanently remove. Following surgery to remove keloids, treatment with SRT can achieve up to 90% to 100% success in permanently removing a keloid. SRT uses painless, low-dose radiation that only goes skin deep to destroy the cells that form keloids—without damaging healthy tissue.

What is the biggest challenge you face working in the realm of wound care?

Hypertrophic scarring is a major problem in wound care. Education and awareness is an important factor in helping the patients and their physicians understand that there is a way to prevent keloids as well as to successfully remove them. This also happens to be the most expensive aspect of the solution. Physician education and public awareness is extremely expensive and can even be cost prohibitive.

What attracted you to this company?

Creating Sensus Healthcare afforded me the opportunity to partner with my best friends in the lengthy career I have had in health care. We always say, “We go to work with our best friends every day!” We have been best friends and business associates for as long as 30 years. We have mutual respect for one another based on our integrity and work ethic. We all have our responsibilities and we perform to our utmost abilities. Now that we have our own company, our commitment is even greater than ever before. We love what we do. We love the market that we serve. We love our physicians and patients. We have built a clinical model that eradicates skin cancer and keloids. That’s what matters most to us.

How do you ensure a work-life balance?

That is a major challenge for those of us who love to work and love the work we do. I’m very fortunate that I have a family that supports me in every way. Family time is very important to us all. Holidays provide extra meaning as the times with family is even more precious.

What book is sitting on your coffee table?

Outliers by Malcolm Galdwell. I highly recommend it. While it was written a few years ago, it shows a clear example of finding a way to success.
