Vitamin D, Trace Element, and Lipid Metabolism Levels May Be Indicators for Psoriasis

Studying the levels of vitamin D, trace elements, and lipid metabolism could aid in psoriasis diagnoses, according to results from a recent study published in Computational and Mathematical Methods in Medicine.

Researchers studied the correlation between the levels of vitamin D, trace elements, and glucose and lipid metabolism in the diagnosis and severity evaluation of psoriasis. In a total of 360 patients with psoriasis and 500 healthy control individuals, the serum trace elements, blood glucose, and blood lipid indexes were compared and analyzed.

According to the laboratory test results, serum 25-(OH) D3, magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), copper/zinc (Cu/Zn), total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), and fasting blood glucose (FPG) were all significantly different between the two groups. Between patients with mild, moderate, and severe psoriasis, laboratory tests showed that 25-(OH) D3, Fe, Se, and HDL-C in the moderate group were lower than those in the mild group, and Cu, TC, TG, and FPG were higher than those in the mild group (P<.05). Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) was negatively correlated with 25-(OH) D3, Fe, Se, Zn, and HDL-C and positively correlated with Cu, Cu/Zn, TC, TG, and FPG. The AUC parameters in the diagnosis of psoriasis were 0.899 for 25-(OH) D3, 0.675 for Cu/Zn, and 0.848 for HDL-C with good sensitivity.

“There are metabolic abnormalities of 25-(OH) D3, Cu/Zn, and HDL-C in patients with psoriasis, and paying attention to these indicators is conducive to the diagnosis of disease,” concluded the study authors.
