SIO Requested Updates to NCCN Guidelines

Washington, DC (27 June 2023) — The Society of Interventional Oncology requested the updates to NCCN guidelines below: 

NCCN Soft Tissue Sarcoma Guidelines

The Society of Interventional Oncology submitted updates to the NCCN Soft Tissue Sarcoma Panel. Submitted by Jack Jennings, MD, PhD, Professor, Washington University; Joseph Erinjeri, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; and Daehee Kim, MD, Assistant Professor, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. This letter requests the NCCN panel consider including an interventional radiologist (IR) on the panel, as well as better defining the role of these therapies and offer more guidance to the referring physicians.  Download the complete 2022 letter here.

NCCN Adult Cancer Pain Guidelines

The Society of Interventional Oncology submitted updates to the NCCN adult cancer pain guidelines. Submitted by Jack Jennings, MD, PhD, Associate Professor, Washington University, Anil N. Kurup, MD, Radiologist, Mayo Clinic and Majid Maybody, MD, Associate Professor of Radiology, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. NCCN Bone Cancer Guidelines

The Society of Interventional Oncology submitted updates to the NCCN Bone Cancer Panel. Submitted by Ernesto Santos, MD, Interventional Radiologist, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Sean Tutton, MD, FSIR, FCIRSE, Interventional Radiologist, UC San Diego Health, this letter requests the NCCN panel consider the future inclusion of an interventional radiologist to the panel to provide important imaging and minimally invasive expertise and further diversify the committee membership. Download the complete 2022 letter here.

NCCN Breast Cancer Guidelines

The Society of Interventional Oncology submitted updates to the NCCN breast cancer guidelines. Submitted by Amy Deipolyi, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Radiology, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and Gary A. Ulaner, MD, PhD, Associate Professor of Radiology, Molecular Imaging and Therapy Service, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. This letter recommends PET/CT to monitor disease progression rather than specifying it as optional and including embolotherapies for treatment of refractory hepatic metastasis. Download the complete 2020 letter here.

NCCN Cancer-Associated Venous Thromboembolic Disease Guidelines

The Society of Interventional Oncology submitted updates to the NCCN Guidelines Panel for Cancer-Associated Venous Thromboembolic Disease. Submitted by Sirish A. Kishore MD, Clinical Assistant Professor of Radiology (Affiliated), Stanford University, Adie Friedman MD, Assistant Professor of Radiology, Mount Sinai Medical Center, and Deepak Sudheendra MD, Assistant Professor of Clinical Radiology, University of Pennsylvania. NCCN Colorectal Cancer Guidelines

The Society of Interventional Oncology submitted updates to the NCCN Colorectal Cancer Guidelines. Submitted by  Kamran Ahrar, MD, Professor of Radiology, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Ryan Hickey, MD, Associate Professor of Radiology, New York University, and R. Peter Lokken, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Radiology, University of Illinois. The Society of Interventional Oncology submitted updates to the NCCN hepatobiliary guidelines. Submitted by Gregory Nadolski, MD, Assistant Professor, University of Pennsylvania, Sid Padia, MD, Associate Professor, UCLA, Amanda Smolock, MD, PhD, and Beau Toskich, MD, Radiologist, Mayo Clinic. NCCN Kidney Cancer Guidelines

The Society of Interventional Oncology submitted updates to the NCCN renal guidelines. Submitted by Ronald S. Arellano MD, Professor of Radiology, Harvard University, Thomas D. Atwell MD, Professor of Radiology, Mayo Clinic, and S. William Stavropoulos MD, Professor of Radiology, University of Pennsylvania. This letter requests the NCCN Kidney Cancer Guideline panel review four specific changes, including the inclusion of microwave ablation as a thermal ablation option, revise the recommendations for imaging follow-up after thermal ablation, and include thermal ablation as a treatment option in the management of T1b tumors. Download the complete 2023 letter here.

NCCN Lung Cancer Guidelines

The Society of Interventional Oncology submitted updates to the NCCN Non-Small Cell Lung Guidelines. Authored by Aaron W.P. Maxwell, MD; Patrick W. Eiken, MD; Robert D. Suh, MD, this letter requests six specific changes to the NCCN Non-Small Cell Lung Guidelines panel centering on the incorporation of image-guided thermal ablation into the main treatment algorithm for patients with primary and metastatic NSCLC. Download the complete 2023 letter here.

NCCN Neuroendocrine Guidelines

The Society of Interventional Oncology submitted updates to the NCCN neuroendocrine guidelines. Submitted by  Etay Ziv, MD, PhD, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Nicholas Fidelman, MD, University of California San Francisco, and Rony Avritscher, MD, UT MD Anderson Cancer Center. This letter requests the NCCN Neuroendocrine and Adrenal Tumors guideline panel review data regarding seven specific changes to update the role of liver-directed therapies (LDT) in the clinical practice guidelines in oncology. Download the complete 2021 letter here.

NCCN Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma Guidelines

The Society of Interventional Oncology submitted updates to the NCCN Pancreatic Adenocarcinoma Panel. Submitted by Amanda Smolock, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor, Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology Department of Radiology Medical College of Wisconsin, and Hooman Yarmohammadi, MD Associate Attending Interventional Radiologist, Director of Research, Interventional Radiology Service, Department of Radiology, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. This letter requests the NCCN panel review two specific changes to include LRT therapies for patients with locally advanced pancreatic cancer and metastatic pancreatic cancer.

NCCN Palliative Care Guidelines

The Society of Interventional Oncology submitted updates to the NCCN Palliative Care Guidelines. Submitted by Sean Tutton, MD, FSIR, FCIRSE, UC San Diego Health; Jack Jennings, MD, PhD, FSIR, Washington University Physicians; Gina Landinez, MD, UC San Francisco Health; Neil Resnick, MD FSIR, Emory University School of Medicine; William S. Rilling MD, FSIR, Medical College of Wisconsin; Alan A. Sag, MD, Duke Health; and Anthony Tadros, MD, UC San Diego Health, this letter requests the NCCN Palliative Care Guidelines panel review the recommendations for inclusion of interventional consultation for pain likely to be relieved with image-guided procedures and inclusion percutaneous transesophageal gastrostomy tube (PTEG) as consideration to palliate nausea and vomiting in the setting of challenging anatomy or intraabdominal metastasis. NCCN Prostate Cancer Guidelines

The Society of Interventional Oncology submitted updates to the NCCN Prostate Cancer Guidelines. Submitted by David A. Woodrum, MD/PhD, Associate Professor of Radiology and Urology, Mayo Clinic; Vijay Ramalingam, MD, Clinical Instructor of Radiology, Harvard; Eric Walser, MD, Professor and Chair of Radiology, UTMB; Lance Mynderse, MD, Associate Professor of Urology and Radiology, Mayo Clinic. This Letter requests the NCCN Prostate Cancer Guidelines panel review the recommendations for inclusion of focused ultrasound ablation, cryoablation, and laser ablation as initial treatment options for very low risk, low risk, favorable intermediate-risk groups. Download the complete 2023 letter here.
