Possible Link Between FD and SIBO Warrants More Study

A possible link between functional dyspepsia (FD) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) has been found, using breath tests during SIBO diagnosis and clinical classifications, but the investigators found that further studies are required.

The study team searched electronic databases through July 2020 for studies reporting prevalence of SIBO in FD. The researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 7 studies incorporating 263 patients with FD and 84 controls. They calculated the prevalence rates, odds ratio, and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of SIBO.

“This is the first systematic review and meta-analysis of FD and SIBO. Based on the available data using breath tests as the diagnostic modality, the prevalence of SIBO is significantly increased in patients with FD, as compared to healthy controls,” the authors concluded.

“Although SIBO prevalence in patients with FD was numerically higher as compared to that in FD patients with concomitant IBS, this failed statistical significance. Thus, appropriately powered case-control studies and clinical trials and are required that not only assess the prevalence of SIBO or treatment effects, but also to better characterize intestinal dysbiosis (e.g., microbial load and function) linked to symptom manifestation.”
