Expert Panel Releases Position Statements on Endoscopy in IBD
The use of endoscopy in the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and related adverse events may help close the gap between various medical and surgical treatment modalities for the disease, according to a set of position statements created by the Global Interventional IBD Group. 1
“Therapeutic endoscopy can be uniquely positioned to bridge medical and surgical treatments,” the Global Interventional IBD Group wrote. “Endoscopic management of mechanical and neoplastic adverse events may help reduce or postpone the need for surgical resection and help treat postoperative adverse events, if surgery is performed.”

The Global Interventional IBD Group—a panel comprised of both national and international experts in gastroenterology, IBD, and other GI-related disciplines—convened to create the position statements to meet the growing need for endoscopic treatment in complex IBD management.
The position statements cover a range of topics including appraisal of endoscopic treatment modalities, the management of acute anastomotic leaks, and training an IBD interventionist.
