Uniting the Cardiovascular Profession Will Improve Cardiovascular Care

Peggy McElgunn, Esq. – Executive Director, Alliance of Cardiovascular Professionals

Seeing an opportunity to unite the profession and improve the benefits and reach of current members of both organizations, Society of Invasive Cardiovascular Professionals (SICP) leadership agreed to combine forces with the Alliance of Cardiovascular Professionals (ACVP). This opportunity to consolidate resources and benefits results in a larger, more supportive organization where resources go further for the membership of the combined organization.

As a true “alliance,” ACVP has long found value in working with administrators, managers, technologists and nurses across disciplines, resulting in better inter-professional education and more exposure for our members. Working and learning together furthers ACVP’s mission to promote quality provision of cardiovascular care — this will be especially true in the invasive field.

Invasive professionals have long been a strong voice in the Alliance’s membership. With the invasive professionals of SICP joining ACVP, there will be new connections with other invasive leaders as well as cardiovascular leaders in other disciplines such as management.

Representing the only professional association for allied health cardiovascular professionals means that now, and in the future, ACVP will be host to a larger community of professionals pursuing excellence in cardiovascular — and, specifically, invasive — care.

Members of both organizations will immediately benefit from expanded networking opportunities among cardiovascular leaders in invasive care and other specialties. ACVP will be better able to pass on value and opportunity, directly reach invasive allied health professionals, and better support their needs. This will also expand opportunities for quality, inter-professional education to improve invasive care.

By uniting both organizations, cardiovascular leaders can further facilitate unified advocacy on behalf of all allied health cardiovascular professionals. ACVP has long been on the front line of health care debates regionally and nationally, particularly in practice issues. With the support of SICP, ACVP now represents a unified voice which will be more strongly heard in policy-making discussions. Cardiovascular leaders can count on a stronger advocacy resource to promote quality care at all levels.

ACVP’s diversity and structure builds consensus into the advocacy process. As a democratic organization, our larger membership will drive the advocacy work of the Alliance, and policy-makers can be confident that the voice of the Association is a voice of a diverse group of members speaking from consensus.

SICP’s active leadership will find a comfortable place in ACVP’s democratic governance structure with specialty-specific councils. ACVP also looks forward to supporting SICP’s established fellowship program and offering new fellowship opportunities to current ACVP invasive members.

By creating one organization, it is expected that there will be a significant impact on the professional landscape of cardiovascular care and further the mission of supporting, educating and recognizing the cardiovascular professional.
