Quality group rates top health insurers

The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA), which accredits health insurance plans, announced its annual ratings this week. Rated on a five-star point scale, the field included 503 commercial, 338 Medicare and 171 Medicaid plans.

It’s important to note that the plans are not ranked against each other but are granted one to five stars based on consumer satisfaction, prevention and treatment. For example, one measure weighs the plans’ performance on following up with patients after hospitalizations for mental health disorders. Stakeholders can search the online list by state and plan category.

According to NCQA, the top 10 states overall include:

  1. Massachusetts
  2. Rhode Island
  3. Wisconsin
  4. Maine
  5. New Hampshire
  6. Minnesota
  7. Vermont
  8. New York
  9. Hawaii
  10. Iowa
