NIMH releases teen depression resource
The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has released a new resource for teens with depression that provides comprehensive information and support.
Broken down into sections, the resource discusses the differences between regular sadness and depression, what signs and symptoms should raise red flags, and how depression can affect certain relationships.
It also explains how depression is a real, treatable brain illness or health problem, and is no one’s fault. While urging teens to seek help as early as possible if they think they’re depressed—talk therapy and anti-depression medications are specifically mentioned—the resource talks briefly about all the different ways to help oneself, including excercising, being outside, getting enough sleep, and spending time with family and friends.
The resource provides links to the National Suicide Hotline, NIMH’s website, and the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s website for Teens, Drugs and Health.
