Medicaid expansion: 25 states in, six others getting closer

State-by-state update: Medicaid Expansion and Insurance Exchanges

Medicaid expansion is now taking place in 26 states, plus the District of Columbia, while six more states are hashing out the details of compromise expansion plans or awaiting approval of their plans from the federal Centers for Medicare or Medicaid Services. Generally, Medicaid coverage is available for those at or below 133-138% of the federal poverty limit (FPL) in the 26 states that are undertaking Medicaid expansion at this time.

Meanwhile, insurance "marketplaces" are open in all 50 states to serve those with incomes above 138% of the federal poverty limit (FPL) who are not covered by employer-provided health coverage.  Those with incomes between 138 - 400% of FPL are eligible for subsidies based on their incomes to assist with the purchase of private health insurance plans.

See the chart below or the color chart illustration for state-by-state details, sourced from kff.org figures current to September 30, 2013.
