Stefan Holubar, MD: Does Surgery Deliver on its Promises for IBD Patients?

Dr Holubar presented at Digestive Disease Week the results of a study on patient-reported outcomes before and after for IBD to determine if surgery delivers on its promises to improve quality of life for patients with IBD.

Stefan Holubar, MD, is a colorectal surgeon and director of research in the Department of Colorectal Surgery at Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.

Hi, I'm Stefan Holubar from Cleveland Clinic Department of Colorectal Surgery. I'm here at DDW 2024 and we are about to present, “Does surgery deliver on its promises for IBD patients?” And basically we have a longitudinal cohort sponsored by the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation that we initiated in 2022 called the IBD SIRQC— Surgical Innovation Research and Quality Collaborative—and this is part of IBD Plexus and this is one of the first studies to come out.

Basically we are showing the quality of life outcomes data for about 174 patients with before and after surgery quality of life measures—patient reported outcomes— and what we found was that overall, based on PROMIS survey instruments, patients reported improved quality of health and less pain interference and multiple other salutatory effects on patient-reported outcomes after surgery compared with before surgery, suggesting that surgery actually does deliver on its promises for patients with inflammatory bowel disease
