The Use of Ovine Collagen Extracellular Matrix Dressings in the Effective Treatment of Wounds for Fast Closure and Treatment of Nerve Pain

Objective:

Demonstrate the use of ovine collagen extracellular matrix (CECM)* in the treatment of wounds with delayed healing and nerve pain.

Introduction:

Wound closure can be a challenge in of it-self but add nerve pain within the wound and that can limit your options for many advance therapies, debridement and dressings. We knew that dressing such as CECM that helps promote tissue granulation6 and provides a temporary scaffold to help cells migrate leading to tissue regeneration for final wound closure1,2 but seeing its effect on nerve pain in conjunction has improved our standard of care here at our wound center.

Methods:

These cases involve patients with nonhealing wounds with nerve pain. With the introduction of CECM the patient’s had a decrease in pain within the first week and no pain shortly thereafter. The wounds were surgically debrided and advanced wound care modalities such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and negative pressure were used in conjunction with CECM.

Conclusion:

In the cases provided, the CECM showed favorable results in decreasing nerve pain and preparation of the wound bed. With decrease in pain we were able to do more advanced wound care and closure ensued more quickly. Wounds healed at an accelerated rate after CECM was introduced.
