Impact of Innovative Moisture Management Border Foam Dressing on Challenging Wounds: Case Series

Wound exudate production is a normal process in wound healing; however, when produced in excess, like that in chronic wounds, there is an increased risk for periwound maceration and/or leakage. Periwound maceration can slow wound healing and make skin more vulnerable to infection. Implementing a wound dressing that can absorb the exudate, prevent backflow onto the healthy surrounding skin, and maintain an optimally moist environment is ideal for prevention of breakdown from occurring.

A prospective case series was completed utilizing an innovative moisture management border foam dressing on patients with challenging exuding wounds. Multilayer compression was applied over top of the dressing, when applicable, based on the clinician’s discretion. Clinicians captured wound progression to closure via: wound measurements, descriptions of the wound and periwound status, and the amount of drainage at the time of visit.

Due to the moisture management technology within the border foam dressing and the gentle silicone border, exudate was pulled through the dressing and transferred into the absorptive foam layer while preventing leakage onto the periwound from the edges of the dressing. The dressing reduced maceration to the wound and periwound skin, while still maintaining a moist environment at the wound’s surface, resulting in positive patient outcomes with wounds progressing from the proliferation phase to the maturation phase. The silicone border provided the added benefit of easy securement to the patient rather than utilizing rolled gauze or other form of securement prior to adding compression, when applicable. Patient studies continue to demonstrate the efficacy within the border foam dressing’s wicking mechanism to manage exudate.
