VA Accelerates Integration of Federal Electronic Health Record System

The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is accelerating deployment of the Federal Electronic Health Record (EHR) system at VA medical facilities, with complete implementation expected by 2031 for seamless integration with the Department of Defense (DOD).

The VA announced via press release plans to deploy the Federal EHR system at 9 more medical facilities, bringing the total to 13 by 2026 and all VA facilities by 2031. This announcement comes after 4 VA sites in Michigan were announced to go live in 2026, with the 9 additional facilities to be announced later this year following planning sessions with VA officials, clinicians, and EHR vendor Oracle Health. The Federal EHR system enhances data exchange between VA and the DOD, aiming to improve customer service and convenience for VA and DOD patients.

The VA is using a market-based approach for site selection to increase the number of deployments and improve staff efficiency. They will also implement a standardized national baseline of products and workflows recommended by subject-matter experts to ensure successful Federal EHR implementation and streamline decision-making.

In a press release, VA Secretary Doug Collins said, “America’s Veterans deserve a medical records system that’s integrated across all VA and DOD components, and that is exactly what we will deliver. We can and will move faster on this important priority. But we’re going to listen to our doctors, nurses and vendor partners along the way to ensure patient safety, quality and customer service.”
