Reviewing Association of UTUC Pathological Characteristics With Daily Fluid Intake, Behavioral Habits
According to results from preoperative questionnaire survey, researchers discovered patients’ daily fluid intake habits correlated significantly with the pathological characteristics of upper tract urothelial carcinoma—including the presence of a G3 tumor, multifocal tumor, and tumor location.
A total of 239 patients admitted to the Department of Urology at Peking University First Hospital for radical nephroureterectomy completed the survey between August 2020 and July 2021. Authors conducted a statistical analysis of responses using SPSS 22.0 software in combination with patients’ postoperative pathological characteristics. Of the responders, 134 were male, 105 were female, with a mean age of 68.1 years, and median disease duration of 4.8 months.
“Multifactorial Logistic regression results suggested that after adjusting for the effects of other variables, UTUC patients who had the habit of drinking at least once every hour during the daytime had a significantly increased risk of high grade (G3) tumors(OR = 1.941, 95% CI: 0.352-1.029, P < .01),” said authors. These same patients also had a decreased risk of multifocal UTUC tumors (OR = 0.344, 95% CI: 1.18-5.582, P = .004).
Patients who reported drinking more than 100 mL of fluid had an increased risk of renipelvic carcinoma, as well as a decreased risk of ureteral carcinoma.
Researchers concluded there was a significant correlation between daily drinking habits and pathological characteristics of UTUC but more evidence is needed.
