Society for Vascular Surgery Names New Officers for 2022-23

ROSEMONT, Ill., Sept. 21, 2022 – The Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) has announced its 2022-23 officers. The vice president and secretary were recently elected via virtual voting and the results were announced at the Society’s Vascular Annual Meeting this summer.

The full slate of officers is:

  • Dr. Michael Dalsing, president, succeeding Dr. Ali AbuRahma
  • Dr. Joseph Mills, president-elect
  • Dr. Matthew Eagleton, elected vice president
  • Dr. Keith Calligaro, treasurer (third of three-year- term)
  • Dr. William Shutze, elected secretary

About the officers:

Dr Daising
Michael Dalsing, MD, DFSVS

 

President Michael Dalsing, MD, DFSVS, started the Division of Vascular Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine and was its director until 2017. During his tenure as director, an independent and integrated Vascular Surgery residency was established in addition to an accredited Vascular Laboratory. He is currently a staff vascular surgeon with IU Health Physicians and Professor Emeritus of Surgery within the Division of Vascular Surgery. He is based in Indianapolis.

His priorities include advocating for vascular surgery at the legislative/regulatory level, enhancing the brand of vascular surgery to the public “so that everyone knows what we do and who we are,” supporting diversity, equity and inclusion implementation and broadening access to quality vascular care especially in vascular care deserts. “I am honored to serve on behalf of the SVS and bring awareness and recognition of the specialty as dedicated full-service vascular care providers. Vascular surgeons and in particular, our members and affiliate members make a meaningful difference in the legislative, administrative, patient care and research arenas to advance quality vascular care for all,” he said.

Joseph L. Mills, MD, DFSVS

 

 

 

President-Elect Joseph L. Mills, MD, DFSVS, is the Reid professor and Chief of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular therapy, and program director of vascular surgery integrated residency at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) in Houston. Long devoted to education, he initiated new integrated vascular surgery residency programs at both the University of Arizona and BCM. He specializes in diabetic foot amputation prevention and limb salvage and co-founded the SALSA limb salvage program in Tucson, Ariz., and the STEP program in Houston, Texas. He is also a prolific researcher, having acted as principal investigator for more than 50 clinical trials and authored more than 400 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.

“I am honored to be a leader of the Society for Vascular Surgery and hope to utilize my role to further advocate for patients, trainees and our profession,” said Dr. Mills. “Our specialty, and medicine in general, are continually changing and I look forward to being an integral part of how the SVS anticipates and responds to today’s rapidly evolving health care environment.”

Dr. Matthew Eagleton 

Vice President Dr. Matthew Eagleton is Chief of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and the Robert R. Linton, MD, Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. He co-directs the MGH Fireman Vascular Center, which oversees one of the largest, multidisciplinary vascular centers in the country, bringing together multiple specialties and more than 100 physicians to provide comprehensive vascular care. Dr. Eagleton also co-directs the MGH Thoracic Aortic Center, leading colleagues from cardiology, cardiac surgery and vascular surgery to optimize aortic care.

Dr. Eagleton has developed a sub-specialization in treating complex aortic disease with endograft therapy. He has more than 200 publications in multiple high-impact journals, many of them related to this work.

He has volunteered extensively with the Society for more than 15 years. Most recently, he chaired the Program Committee, which oversees educational programing for the SVS Vascular Annual Meeting. “I am dedicated to the mission and vision of our Society and the practice and future of vascular surgery,” he said.

Treasurer Keith D. Calligaro, MD, DFSVS, is chief of the Section of Vascular Surgery and director of the Vascular Surgery Fellowship at Pennsylvania Hospital and clinical professor of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Philadelphia. He is a member of the SVS Appropriateness, Audit, Conflict of Interest and Professional Conduct, and Document Oversight committees.

Dr. Calligaro want to further collaborate with the diversified groups in the specialty. “Vascular surgeons are the vanguard of treating vascular disease and are dedicated to work in partnership with other specialties that provide vascular care and provide comprehensive care in vascular disease management.”

Secretary William Shutze, of Plano, Texas, co-founded Texas Vascular Associates in 1997 with five other vascular surgeons. The group has grown to include 16 vascular surgeons and two Advanced Nurse practitioners serving 19 hospitals in six counites in the greater Dallas metropolitan area.

His principal site of service has been at the Heart Hospital Plano where he is Co-Director of the Aortic Program. He has written or co-authored more than 90 peer-reviewed publications on diverse vascular surgery conditions and topics.

He has served on numerous SVS councils, committees, task forces and special initiatives over the past several years, including as a co-chair of the American College of Surgeons/SVS Vascular Center Verification and Quality Improvement Program, which seeks to create a credentialing program for hospitals and outpatient-based facilities.

“I am humbled and honored to serve as secretary and I am grateful for the opportunities given me to serve my colleagues, friends, peers and patients,” he said.
