CIS & IMC Are the First in Acadiana to Use Auryon Laser Atherectomy System In a Hospital Setting to Treat Leg Blockages
APRIL 23, 2024 - NEW IBERIA- Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) interventional cardiologist Dr. Krishna Nagendran is the first in Acadiana to use the Angiodynamics Auryon Laser Atherectomy System in a hospital setting to treat peripheral artery disease in the legs. The procedure took place in the catherization lab at Iberia Medical Center (IMC).
The Auryon Atherectomy System by Angiodynamics, Inc. uses laser technology to deliver powerful treatment for peripheral artery blockages in the legs. It is the first laser atherectomy system to efficiently treat lesions of any type, severity, length, or location (above and below the knee), with minimal impact on vessel walls. It is the only system capable of delivering short, high-powered pulsed-laser energy to effectively treat peripheral artery disease while preserving the vessel wall.
“This new technology allows us to treat a wider range of blockages, of any severity, length or location,” said Dr. Nagendran. “This will result in better outcomes for our patients with cardiovascular disease in the legs, and we are proud to offer it right here in New Iberia.”
Peripheral artery disease, or PAD, prevents blood flow to the legs and feet, causing significant pain, limited mobility, and in severe cases, leads to the need for surgery or amputation. Symptoms of PAD in the legs include pain or cramping after activity, numbness, coldness, sores or ulcers that won’t heal, discoloration, hair loss, shiny skin or a weak pulse.
