Social Media Rosacea Videos Produced by Non-Health Care Sources Are Less Accurate but More Widely Viewed

Rosacea videos on social media produced by non-health care sources are viewed more frequently than videos produced by health care professionals but are less accurate, found Chen et al in a study published in Dermatology Online Journal.

Researchers aimed to assess the accuracy, quality, viewer engagement, and viewer experience of rosacea videos on social media by searching “rosacea” and examining videos on YouTube in September 2018. Videos were categorized by source and accuracy measured using the Dy et al Accuracy Scale (DAS) and Accuracy in Digital-health Instrument (ANDI), and viewer engagement was measured by engagement ratio, which includes total likes, dislikes, comments, and total views.

Videos produced by health care sources were more accurate than those produced by non-health care sources (3.57±0.83 vs 2.54±1.07; P=.001), but videos produced by non-health care sources received higher engagement (viewer engagement ratio, 0.031±0.044 vs 0.014±0.013; P=.0159).

“Rosacea videos on social [media] produced by non-health care sources were less accurate and of lower quality but received greater viewer engagement than those produced by health care sources,” concluded the study authors. –Lisa Kuhns
