Over the counter (OTC) products can improve rosacea symptomatology and severity and are recommended for use before and during prescription therapy as part of a maintenance regimen.
“This article explores the role of skin barrier impairment in rosacea and the effect of OTC skincare products in improving barrier function and disease symptomatology,” wrote the study authors.
A panel of dermatologists completed a survey on OTC products they recommend for rosacea. The results were organized and discussed with the results of a literature review.
The panel’s consensus was that OTC products should be used as part of a maintenance regimen in addition to prescription medications to improve rosacea symptomatology and severity. Occlusives, humectants, ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide were all considered beneficial.
“The use of OTC products can improve rosacea symptomatology and signs,” concluded the study authors. “As adjuncts, these products are recommended before and during prescription therapy and as part of a maintenance regimen,” they continued. –Lisa Kuhns
