OTC Contraceptive Recalled

Apothecus Pharmaceutical Corp. is recalling 17,280 cartons of VCF Vaginal Contraceptive Film. According to the April 3, 2024, US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Enforcement Report, deviations from Current Good Manufacturing Practice regulations prompted the recall. No further details were provided.

The recall affects VCF Vaginal Contraceptive Film (nonoxynol-9, 28%), packaged in a carton containing nine single-sealed films (NDC 52925-112-01), from lot 1G008A/1G00804722 (Exp 7/31/25). The cartons were distributed by Apothecus Pharmaceutical Corp, Ronkonkoma, New York, throughout the United States.

Apothecus Pharmaceutical Corp. voluntarily initiated the recall on March 21, 2024. The FDA designated the recall a Class II on March 28, 2024. Products affected by Class II recalls may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences if used. While remote, a possibility of serious harm also exists.

VCF Vaginal Contraceptive Film is an over-the-counter spermicide product used to prevent pregnancy.
