Class I, II Recalls for Hand Sanitizers Distributed in Two States

A Class I recall for hand sanitizer distributed in Florida and Washington was recently initiated by Salon Technologies International Inc. According to the October 12, 2022, US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Enforcement Report, the recalled sanitizer was contaminated with benzene.

The Class I recall affects Antica Farmacista Hand Sanitizer Ocean Citron (ethyl alcohol, denatured 65%), packaged in 473 mL/16 fl oz bottles (UPC 8 47005 00450 9), from lot 1166A (Exp. 6/18/23). The affected sanitizer was distributed in Florida and Washington by Antica Farmacista, Seattle, WA.

A Class I designation warns use of the affected product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death. The FDA issued its Class I designation October 4, 2022. Salon Technologies International voluntarily initiated the recall September 14, 2022.

Additionally, the firm is recalling a single lot of sanitizing hand spray because FDA analysis found it to contain acetaldehyde and acetal above specification limits. That recall, designated Class II, affects sanitizing hand spray 80% (alcohol 80% v/v), packaged in 2 fl oz (60 mL) bottles (UPC 6 96952 12904 5), from lot 20-018 (Exp. 4/3/23). The recalled sanitizer was distributed in Florida and Washington by Salon Technologies International, Orlando, FL.

A Class II designation signals use of the product could cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences. A remote possibility of serious harm also exists. The FDA issued the designation October 4, 2022, after Salon Technologies International voluntarily initiated the recall September 14, 2022.
