Class I, II Recalls for Hand Sanitizer
A recall of 2 lots of Artnaturals hand sanitizer has received a Class I designation by US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), according to the April 27, 2022, FDA Enforcement Report, signaling that use of affected products could cause significant adverse health consequences or death. According to the FDA report, the sanitizer from the 2 lots is contaminated with benzene, acetaldehyde, and acetal.
In addition, recalls of multiple additional lots of the hand sanitizer were designated Class II by the FDA, which communicates that use of the product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or a remote possibility of serious harm. According to the FDA report, the additional lots were recalled because they were manufactured with ingredients included in the contaminated lots.
The Class I recall affects Artnaturals scent-free hand sanitizer (ethyl alcohol 62.5%,), 8-ounce bottles (UPC 8 16820 02820 5), from lots G20127E and G20128A (Exp. 5/1/22). The lots were distributed within the United States by Artnaturals, Gardena, CA.
The Class II recall, for the same product with the same distribution, includes hand sanitizer from the following lots:
- G20109D, G2019E, G20125E, G20125F, G20125D, G20125A, G20126C, G20126A, G20126D, G20126B, G20126E, G20127C, G20127B, G20127D, G20127A, G20127F, G20127A, G20128B, G20128C, G20128D, G20128E, G20128F, G20129B, G20129A, G20129C, G20129D, G20129E, G20130B, G20130A, G20130C, G20132A, G20132B, and G20133A (Exp. 5/1/22);
- G20133A (Exp. 8/1/22); and
- G20154A and G20155A (Exp. 6/1/22).
Virgin Scent Inc voluntarily initiated the recalls October 26, 2021. The FDA issued the recall classifications April 22, 2022.
