The Changing Role of Pharmacists in Telepharmacy for Chronic Disease Management

Research presented at the 2024 ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting and Exhibition delves into the evolving role of pharmacists in telepharmacy for chronic disease management (CDM), identifying challenges and strategies to enhance patient communication, optimize technology support, and improve overall health care outcomes.

This study explores the changing role of pharmacists in telepharmacy for CDM in New York State, focusing on enhancing patient communication, optimizing health care technology support, and improving telepharmacy implementation. By examining challenges and opportunities, the study provides insights for better integration of telepharmacy in health care to improve patient outcomes. Methods included qualitative research with 11 pharmacists, using semistructured interviews to gather insights into experiences with telepharmacy in CDM.

Analysis of interview data revealed key themes regarding the role of pharmacists in telepharmacy for CDM, emphasizing the importance of trust-building and improved communication. Challenges such as technological barriers and lack of training were frequently mentioned, highlighting the need for better integration of pharmacists into the health care team. The use of telepharmacy to improve medication adherence and reduce pill burden was seen as beneficial, with a push for enhanced training and support systems to leverage these tools effectively and address health disparities in underserved communities.

“This study underscores the potential of telepharmacy to transform chronic disease management by enhancing communication, addressing social determinants of health, and more effectively integrating pharmacists,” researchers said. “However, to realize this potential, increased training, technological support, and institutional backing are needed. By addressing these gaps, telepharmacy can significantly improve medication adherence and patient outcomes, particularly in managing chronic diseases in underserved populations.”
