Opioid Settlement Reached Between City of Everett, WA, and Pharmacies

Ann W Latner, JD

The city of Everett, Washington, was the first city to sue Purdue Pharma, the maker of OxyContin, back in 2017 after a sharp rise in drug misuse, addiction, and crime as a result of the opioid crisis. Other cities across the country soon followed, taking aim at distributors, manufacturers, and pharmacies, as the damage caused by the opioid epidemic became apparent.

Now a settlement has been reached with CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Teva, and Allergan, as part of a series of settlements in Washington state. The city of Everett, the largest in its county, will receive about $4 million in settlements.

This settlement comes 6 months after the state reached a settlement with the drug distributors McKesson Corp, Cardinal Health Inc, and AmerisourceBergen for up to $518 million to be paid over 17 years. That settlement was reached after the close of evidence was presented in a trial which lasted half a year.
