New York Pharmacist Arrested for Illegal Dispensing
The New York State Police have announced the arrest of pharmacist Clyde Stevens, 46, of Binghamton, NY following an investigation at a Rite Aid pharmacy in Endwell, NY.
The Investigation
According to a press release from New York State Police Troop C, the investigation began when the pharmacy identified discrepancies in medication distribution. The investigation revealed that Stevens, who was employed as a pharmacist at the store, had illegally dispensed both controlled and noncontrolled medications, including issuing fraudulent prescriptions. Investigators discovered that Stevens had regularly dispensed quantities exceeding physicians’ prescriptions, resulting in a financial loss to the pharmacy. Further investigation revealed that Stevens had also unlawfully filled prescriptions for controlled substances which were never authorized by a medical practitioner.
The Charges
Stevens was charged with over 20 counts of wrongdoing, including 5 counts of criminal sale of a prescription of a controlled substance or of a controlled substance by a practitioner or pharmacist (Class C felony), 11 counts of forgery in the second degree (Class D felony), 1 count of grand larceny in the third degree (Class D felony), and 5 counts of misdemeanor fraud and deceit related to controlled substances. Seventeen of the charges are felonies. Stevens is facing significant prison time.
