Hi there, I'm Kim Orleck, a PA from Atlanta Gastroenterology in Atlanta, Georgia. I'm thrilled to be cochairing the inaugural 2024 APP Institute for Inflammatory Bowel Disease. For my cochair..
KEARNS: Hello everyone, I'm Kim Kearns, I'm an advanced practitioner from Duly Health and Care in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. And I couldn't be more overjoyed to, of course, cochair with my great friend and colleague, Kim Orleck, for this inaugural event that we're all hopefully about to experience.
ORLECK: So, Kim, I'd love to hear from you. Why is this so important? What are you so excited for, this inaugural APP IBD event?
KEARNS: Yes, I think, Kim, like you and I come from, you know, the same thought process with this is from a community-based APP, right? Kind of some of these education gaps that both you and I have chatted about for our APP colleagues specifically in inflammatory bowel disease.
Over the last few years, we have seen an explosion specifically of IBD therapies for our patients. So I think for me, the greatest part and most thing that I'm excited about when we helped create the format of this program was really how to close some of these gaps of education that I think you and I have both seen in practice.
ORLECK: Yeah, me too. So a little bit more, I mean, I think you've seen it, Kim, I've seen it in community practice. APPs are doing so much more of the diagnosing, the treating, really managing these patients. I know you're just as excited to be able to give our fellow APPs the education, the tools, the confidence to really feel comfortable with leading those patients and shared decision-making and the right therapies and how to treat and monitor these patients with guidelines.
KEARNS: Absolutely, Kim, and I think the outline of the amazing faculty that we have, Kim, is really going to hit on all of these points kind of like the start to finish, starting with of course the basics of IBD, moving through that diagnostic strategy, and then right away getting into those treatment paradigms, right, that I think you and I have recognized have definitely changed and I couldn't agree with you more.
Those of us that work in the community practice, we are now the face of managing IBD for a lot of these patients in the community. So what a great way, of course, to spend the weekend, right, is learning more about IBD and how to manage these patients appropriately with some of your APP colleagues, right, from around the world.
And Kim, can you tell us what are you most excited about to see this weekend?
ORLECK: I mean, honestly, Kim, in addition to the faculty you mentioned, the physicians, the APPs, all who love teaching and encouraging and empowering APPs, I think the thing I'm really excited for and you know we developed this curriculum but the fact that we get an hour for each of these topics I think is really unique. This isn't going to be the typical 15-minute high-level, where you feel overwhelmed. I think we've really given our speakers an ample amount of time to really dive a little bit deeper into all these therapies and make sure that all the APPs who are going to be listening live or listening via the recording really get to understand everything about these therapies and where to position them and how to monitor them and who that right patient is. And I think it's just so unique the amount of time we've been able to be given in this agenda.
KEARNS: And Kim, you said it earlier too, just providing confidence, right? This ample amount of time to dive in so that all of those that are attending actually have confidence when they walk away from this weekend course, that they're going to be able to, of course, manage our IBD patients, I think with greater outcomes that I think all of us really want from our IBD population as well.
ORLECK: So just to recap, I think you guys can feel the excitement of Kim and I for cochairing this and the excitement as this event nears. And just a few reminders that this event is going to be great for all APPs—so private practice, community, even GI or outside of GI who really want to get more knowledge on IBD. So multiple different ways you can be involved in this event. You can register for free to join this event live, or there are multiple options—we'll share the link—where you can pay a very small fee to have access to the recordings.
Kim, anything you'd like to conclude with?
KEARNS: No, Kim, I'm just super excited to actually be a part of this inaugural event, especially cochairing with you, and even more exciting, of course, to get all the feedback from all of you in our audience and APPs.
So as we move forward in developing programs, we continue to give you exactly the education that you need to provide what we wish to do, of course, as APPs, which is, of course, to provide the best outcomes for our patients.
