Testing Artificial Intelligence Frameworks to Improve Managed Care for Rare Diseases
This research presented at AMCP Nexus 2024 explores the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in developing a framework to support the mental health of individuals with rare diseases, highlighting key areas where managed care professionals can make a significant impact.
Despite the potential for significant health improvements, over 90% of rare diseases lack FDA-approved treatments, resulting in a significant unmet need. Utilizing artificial intelligence may enhance the efficiency of developing solutions for health care professionals by analyzing vast amounts of data to identify patterns.
In 2023, AMCP Market Insights conducted a literature review to identify ways in which managed care professionals can impact the mental health of individuals with rare diseases. Using AI prompts in ChatGPT4, they created a conceptual framework with supporting actions from the review, which was later refined by expert panelists during a discussion.
The literature review found 8 crucial areas for managed care professionals to impact the mental health of individuals with rare diseases, including identification, care coordination, mental health services, and more. AI enhanced strategies for each area and structured them into a framework, which was then assessed and improved by a panel of experts for accuracy.
“The framework, designed to enhance mental health care for individuals with rare diseases, identifies key areas for managed care professional influence,” said researchers. “The use of a targeted literature review and AI have streamlined the process of condensing extensive data into a framework for experts to review.”
