General Session: America’s Pipeline Conundrum: Paying for Cures
On Tuesday, October 17, 2017, Alan Weil, JD, editor in chief of Health Affairs, will moderate the AMCP 2017 general session. Mr Weil is a leader in health care research, and frequently speaks on national health policy including Medicare and the ACA.
The discussion will include Jane F Barlow, MD, MBA, MPH, senior advisor of the new drug development paradigms initiative project on financing of curative therapies in the United States at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Center for Biomedical Innovation. Dr Barlow is a clinical and strategic executive with experience in cost-effectiveness. Her current research focus includes payer impact on financing strategies.
JD Kleinke is a medical economist and health care expert working with high-growth health care organizations as an investor, mentor, and advisor. Mr Kleine is an advocate for economic reform based on a data-driven, patient-centered health care system.
The discussion will focus on curative treatments such as the HCV drugs and exorbitantly priced gene therapy treatments. They will tackle how the health care industry can handle paying for treatments that are extremely effective but unsustainably expensive.
The speakers will also discuss the burgeoning world of value-based care, including topics such as new models and experimental payment models in development.
