HRS 2023 Conference Coverage

Bradley Knight, MD, on Highlights From the Conference

Featuring Bradley Knight, MD

In this video, Bradley Knight, MD, Clinical Editor of EP Lab Digest, discusses highlights from Heart Rhythm 2023.

Transcripts:

I'm here at the 2023 Heart Rhythm Society (HRS) meeting. It has been an exciting meeting. I think if there was any question that people would return in person to meetings, this program has answered that question. Yesterday, the plenary session and late-breaking trials were standing room only. So, there has really been renewed interest in people attending in-person meetings.

Of course, I think probably the most exciting part of these meetings for me is being able to get together with former colleagues and fellows. I've already had several people just this morning come by and say hello. So, from a social standpoint, it's wonderful to get colleagues back together and have that camaraderie. From a programmatic standpoint, it's a great meeting because of the diversity of sessions. In addition to the HRS sessions, there is a plenary session with Dr. Kalyanam Shivkumar, who gave an outstanding presentation about cardiac anatomy, his new free textbook is available to everybody, and the history behind generating that information from the McAlpine Collection. Congratulations to him on an outstanding keynote at HRS.

The late-breaking clinical trials have increased by about 50% this year. There was a great session yesterday with 4 late breakers—that always attracts a lot of interest and simultaneous publications in the HeartRhythm journal. Beyond the meeting itself, there was a lot of satellite symposium. The extravascular ICD is receiving a lot of attention this year. Dr. Paul Friedman is presenting the long-term data from the extravascular ICD, and there is a satellite symposium meeting on Saturday. There are also Rhythm Theaters, which allow industry to get more involved in non-CME programming. There will be a live case of ICE-guided left atrial appendage closure with Watchman (Boston Scientific) at Riverside in Columbus, Ohio. That will be an exciting session. We are also very proud to have good representation from all our programs, including Northwestern.
