Wis. Paramedic Accused of Knowingly Injecting Patients With Wrong Drugs

New details in the case of a paramedic accused of stealing medication raise serious questions about the safety of patients treated by the man. The Sauk County District Attorney’s Office recently filed additional charges of reckless endangerment and misconduct in office against 39-year-old Jason Ramker, a former employee of the Baraboo District Ambulance Service and the Dells-Delton EMS.

Last fall, prosecutors charged Ramker, of Portage, with misdemeanor theft and felony drug possession. The initial charges alleged Ramker stole pain medication from a supply closet within the Baraboo District Ambulance Service and swapped it with other substances to cover his tracks. When the initial charges were filed in November, it appeared as though no patients had been affected by the tampering.

But new charges detail a more elaborate scheme in which Ramker allegedly stole pain medication from vials that were intended for patients as they were being transported by the Dells-Delton EMS. Prosecutors now say he replaced the substances with a high dose of an over-the-counter allergy medication and injected it into patients in order to put them into a “deep fog.”
