Ill. Man Dies Attempting Backflip Off Wall

July 15--An Austin man died after hitting his head while trying to do a backflip near the lakeshore in the Gold Coast neighborhood, authorities said.

Terrence Mauldin was with his 23-year-old nephew when he attempted a backflip off a three-foot-high retaining wall south of North Avenue Beach around 7:20 p.m., police said. Mauldin landed head-first on the concrete, according to police.

Paramedics responded to the 1500 block of North Lake Shore Drive and performed CPR on Mauldin and took him to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said.

Mauldin, 54, of the 5600 block of West Augusta Boulevard, was pronounced dead at 7:58 p.m. in the hospital emergency room, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office.

An autopsy is scheduled for today.
