Four Wis. Amish Children Hurt When Car Hits Buggy

Sandy Cullen

Oct. 06--Four Amish children were seriously injured Thursday morning when the horse and buggy they were traveling in was struck by a car in the town of Marcellon, the Columbia County Sheriff's Office said.

Sheriff Dennis E. Richards said two of the children were taken by helicopter to UW Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The other two children were taken by ambulance to Divine Savior Hospital in Portage.

The crash happened around 8:15 a.m. when the buggy left the driveway of Mishler's Country Store heading west onto Barry Road and was struck by the eastbound vehicle, Richards said.

The driver of the car was taken to Divine Savior Hospital and was treated and released, he said.

The cause of the crash is being investigated. The sheriff said alcohol or drugs do not appear to be factors.
