PHOENIX - Today, the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions (SCAI) announced the recipients of the second cycle of Early Career Research Grants, an initiative offered by SCAI to support the next generation of interventional cardiologists in advancing their research careers. The second cycle recipients were presented during the Early Career Award Presentations at the SCAI 2023 Scientific Sessions in Phoenix.

The Early Career Research Grants provide a platform for junior-level investigators who are within ten years of completing interventional cardiology fellowship to study high-priority, clinically important topics and to have their findings disseminated through a variety of professional channels. The grants for this cycle are funded by support from Abbott and Cardiovascular Systems, Inc.

The grant recipients are as follows: 

SCAI-Abbott Early Career Research Grant: Nadia Sutton, MD, MPH, FSCAI; Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN. Project: “Concordance of invasive coronary microvascular dysfunction parameters with novel myocardial blood oxygen magnetic resonance imaging.”  

SCAI-Cardiovascular Systems, Inc. Early Career Research Grant: Eric Secemsky, MD, MSc, FSCAI; Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, MA. Project: “Trends in peripheral vascular interventions through pandemic and controversy: an analysis of the changes in modality, setting, and disparities in treatment from 2016 to 2023.”

We are really excited to continue this program to help early career interventional cardiologists launch and continue their investigative academic careers. These projects will further our understanding of diagnostic and treatment options for patients with cardiovascular disease,” said SCAI President Sunil V. Rao, MD, FSCAI. “We appreciate the support of our industry partners who are closing the gap in research funding and giving these clinicians the opportunity to pursue these important research projects.” 

Grant recipients will present their findings during the SCAI 2024 Scientific Sessions in Long Beach, CA and have the opportunity to publish manuscripts in the Journal of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography & Interventions (JSCAI).
