Clinical Research Forum Announces the 2022 Top Ten Clinical Research Achievement Awards
Awards identify and celebrate major advances in the biomedical field resulting from the nation’s investment in health and welfare.
WASHINGTON D.C., March 7, 2022 – The Clinical Research Forum (CR Forum), a non-profit membership association of top clinical research experts and thought leaders from the nation’s leading academic health centers, recently announced the recipients of the 2022 Top Ten Clinical Research Achievement Awards. The research studies will be honored at an awards gala, to be held at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place in Chicago on April 19, 2022.
“Clinical research has taken center stage by actively demonstrating what brilliant minds and sound science can achieve for the betterment of humanity,” said Harry P. Selker, MD, MSPH, Chair of the CR Forum and Dean, Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute at Tufts University. “The Top Ten Clinical Research Achievement Awards honor and celebrate the tireless efforts and the profound contributions of clinical researchers and advocates. The breadth of the research among this year’s entries illustrates the essential nature of clinical research and the direct impact it has on public health. We congratulate all of the 2022 winners for their outstanding work.”
According to Clinicaltrials.gov, there were 399,543 registered studies in 2021. The United States leads these efforts by conducting more studies than any other nation in the world. These awards highlight ten research studies (published in a peer-reviewed journal in 2021) that demonstrate a vital impact on patient care. Submissions for the Top Ten Awards program come from United States-based academic, medical, and/or health centers and include research that spans multiple medical disciplines. They recognize the fact that clinical trials have grown more sophisticated and complex in recent years and highlight the need for ongoing funding and support to help ease suffering worldwide.
The following are the recipients of the 2022 Top Ten Clinical Research Achievement Awards:
- ADAPTABLE (Aspirin Dosing: A Patient-Centric Trial Assessing Benefits and Long-Term Effectiveness) “Comparative Effectiveness of Aspirin Dosing in Cardiovascular Disease” (Duke University)
- Association of Dose Tapering With Overdose or Mental Health Crisis Among Patients Prescribed Long-term Opioids (Regents of the University of California (Davis))
- Behavioral nudges increase COVID-19 vaccinations (University of California Los Angeles)

- Evaluating eligibility criteria of oncology trials using real-world data and AI (Stanford University)
- New 'race-free' equation to estimate kidney function (Tufts Medical Center; Tufts University School of Medicine)
- Race, Genetic Ancestry, and Estimating Kidney Function in chronic kidney disease (University of California, San Francisco)
- Once-Weekly Semaglutide in Adults with Overweight or Obesity (Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
- The important role of autoantibodies neutralizing type I IFNs in COVID-19 (The Rockefeller University)
- Tympanostomy Tubes or Medical Management for Recurrent Acute Otitis Media (University of Pittsburgh)
Of note in this year’s Top 10 list, two studies, one from Tufts University and one from University of California, San Francisco, are sharing a spot on the list for their innovative research into the accounting for race in computing kidney function, related to their two articles that appeared together in the New England Journal of Medicine. Also of note, Dr. Alejandro Hobermanof the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, is the first person ever to receive a second Top 10 Clinical Research Achievement Awards. He received an award in 2015 and is now being honored again in 2022. For more information please visit https://www.clinicalresearchforum.org/page/2022_Top10Finalists.
