Denver Case Study:
This Atrial Septal Defect closure demonstrates the benefits of integrating ultrasound echocardiography into the procedure room to assist in the guidance of structural heart disease interventions. Dr. Carroll demonstrates the integration not only of x-ray fluoroscopy and ultrasound echocardiography technologies, but also integration of the ultrasound team (echocardiographer and/or sonographer) for a very efficient structural heart disease intervention. The University of Colorado Hospital team uses Live 3D TEE and Live xPlane to fully appreciate the anatomy of the defect. These multi-plane ultrasound techniques are also used during the actual deployment of the device placement in 3D space of the heart. Finally, they are used for post-assessment of device deployment – including rim capture, residual leaks and noninterference with nearby structures. Dr. Carroll notes that the value of real-time three dimensional and multi-plane echocardiography increases as Percutaneous repairs are completed on larger and more complex ASDs are closed.
