Chapter News The SICP’s Gulf Coast Chapter held their first RCIS review course June 10-11, 2006. The SICP was proud to support the Gulf Coast Chapter in this mutually beneficial event. SICP’s focus on education continues to grow and with the support and participation from our chapters, we will continue to focus on increasing the visibility of the RCIS credential. The Gulf Coast Chapter’s involvement allowed the SICP to offer a favorable registration rate fee for attendees. The SICP hopes other chapters will choose to host a review course. Not only does it bring national recognition to the chapter, but it also allows the SICP to offer an educational event to our members. The course was held at Tomball Regional Hospital in Tomball, Texas, near Houston. SICP president Lynne Jones, RN, RCIS, FSICP coordinated the course, along with her staff and Gulf Coast chapter members Debbie Rockoff and Debbie Bhai. The SICP received some wonderful feedback. Instructors at the course were Lynne Jones, RN, RCIS, FSICP, Debbie Rockoff, RN, BSN, RCIS, FSICP, Todd Ginapp, EMT-P, RCIS, FSICP, and Cary Darling, RT(R), RCIS. They all did an amazing job covering the information, as attendees noted: This is the most detailed course I have ever attended. Very good speakers, just the right size room and attendees. I was never bored. Good hands-on computations. Well done!!! Great job!!! A great review course. Lynne and her staff: Todd, Debbie and Cary did a fantastic job preparing us for the RCIS exam. I’m going to take the formula sheet and practice computations in our cath lab. It will reinforce the retention of all the good stuff I learned in this course. The Keystone Chapter of SICP held its second dinner lecture on May 17, 2006, at the Eden Resort Inn in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Our guest speaker was Dr. Roy Small, Medical Director for the Congestive Heart Failure Program at Lancaster General Hospital. Dr. Small presented a program entitled Drugs to Devices: Emerging Treatment of Congestive Heart Failure. The meeting was attended by 47 cardiovascular professionals from south central Pennsylvania. Dinner was sponsored by Rob Hadley from Guidant, with the additional sponsorship of Boston Scientific, GE Healthcare and Possis. The next meeting is being planned for September 2006. SICP at the SCAI Annual Meeting The Society of Invasive Cardiovascular Professionals (SICP) was formed with encouragement from the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) which recognized the need for a professional society to create and maintain professional standards, promote continuing education, and to act as an advocate for the non-physician members of the invasive cardiovascular care team. The SICP continues to maintain a positive relationship with the SCAI. It was an honor for the Society to conduct the RCIS Review Course at the SCAI meeting. Our premier educators, Jeff Davis, RCIS, RRT, FSICP, Darren Powell, RCIS, FSICP and James Glasgow, RN, EMT-P, RCIS, FSICP covered the basic review topics such as coronary anatomy, hemodynamics, pharmacology, calculations, and radiation and radiation safety. The SICP is excited to have the opportunity to partner with SCAI for these mutually beneficial events. The SICP will present another RCIS Review Course in conjunction with the SCAI meeting next year at the SCAI Scientific Sessions, May 9-11 in Orlando, Florida. Please make plans to attend! SICP’s presence at the SCAI meeting in Chicago was also a great opportunity to interact with Illinois chapter members. It was a pleasure to meet Milka Gemaljevic, Zorka Musovic and Cindy Pastern, all from the Illinois Chapter. It is their dedication and enthusiasm that has made the Illinois chapter a great success. Additional chapter members also stopped by the SICP booth. The SICP is pleased to have Morton Kern, MD, FACC, FSCAI speaking at the SoCal Symposium as our keynote speaker, as well as presenting a lecture on coronary physiology. His participation will only strengthen the SICP/SCAI relationship by increasing physician recognition for the allied health professional in the invasive cardiovascular practice. The SICP hopes to foster an ever-growing relationship with the SCAI. SICP encourages our members to educate your physicians regarding the importance of having credentialed staff in their labs. The RCIS is the gold standard credential in the cardiac cath lab and it is through education and physician recognition that the RCIS will become recognized nationally. SoCal Symposium SICP's SoCal Symposium, September 20-23, 2006, will update you on the latest hot topics and contemporary ideas in invasive cardiology. An RCIS review course and breakout sessions will be held the last day of the conference. Attendees are encouraged to participate in the breakout meetings, such as the chapter development meeting, and Teach the Teacher session (for review course instructor training and the leadership sessions). The RCIS Review Course lectures are designed for a complete overview for any seasoned technologist or as a great starting point for anyone interested in pursuing the Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist.
