Chronic total occlusions (CTO) in the coronary circulation present a major challenge for the interventional cardiologist. The past few years have witnessed the development of novel techniques and devices to successfully revascularize this difficult subset of coronary artery disease. Studies have concluded that CTOs can be found in one-fifth to one-third of patients undergoing diagnostic cardiac catheterization.
