HHS Announces Recovery Innovation Challenge for Provider Organizations

Through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA), the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced a new initiative to identify innovations developed by peer-run or community-based behavioral health organizations—as well as their partner entities, such as governments, health systems, hospitals, and health plans—to facilitate recovery.

Participants are encouraged to share details about practices they are using to advance recovery and demonstrate how the practices have either expanded on SAMHSA’s definition of recovery or helped them to overcome challenges in incorporating recovery into their behavioral health services or systems.

“SAMHSA’s Recovery Innovation Challenge will allow us to learn from the recovery service community about tools and techniques they’re using at the state and local level that need to be scaled nationwide,” HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a news release.

For SAMHSA, the challenge is an opportunity to engage with a larger and more diverse range of organizations, including providers of recovery services and supports at all levels of behavioral healthcare.

“We are excited to introduce SAMHSA’s first-ever Recovery Innovation Challenge and are eager to give voice to those doing innovative work in this space,” said Miriam E. Delphin-Rittmon, PhD, HHS assistant secretary for mental health and substance use and the leader of SAMHSA. “By using this vehicle, we hope to gain a better understanding of effective and innovative recovery practices from a very diverse field. We aim to take what works for a small group and scale up to a larger population.”

SAMHSA is now accepting submissions for the challenge. The deadline for submissions is July 15, 2022. Challenge finalists, who will be announced on August 6,2022, will then present to a panel of judges September 2 to 9, 2022, with award winners to be announced in October. A purse prize of up to $400,000 will be distributed to up to 10 award winners, depending on judges’ overall scores.
