Kipu Health Names New CEO

Kipu Health, a provider of electronic health record, customer relationship management, and revenue cycle management software for behavioral healthcare organizations, announced on Monday that it has appointed Carina Edwards as CEO. Edwards succeeds Paul Joiner, who served as the organization’s lead executive from June 2021 to March 2023.

Most recently, Edwards served as the CEO of Quil, a joint venture between Comcast NBCUniversal and Independence Blue Cross. Her prior experience includes executive roles with Imprivata, Nuance, Zynx Health, and Philips Healthcare.

“Carina's dedication to improving the lives of patients and providers has been a constant theme throughout her career, making her an ideal fit for Kipu,” R. Andrew Eckert, Kipu's board chair, said in a news release.

MetroHealth, University Hospital Announce Behavioral Healthcare Services Partnership

The MetroHealth System and University Hospitals have announced a provider agreement to expand access to behavioral healthcare services in Northeast Ohio. Per terms of the deal, UH clinicians will provide care at the new MetroHealth Cleveland Heights Behavioral Health Hospital, working alongside MetroHealth staff.

The Cleveland Heights, Ohio, facility, which was constructed at a cost of $42 million, opened in October 2022. The hospital offers inpatient and outpatient levels of care for conditions including bipolar disorder, depression, addiction, mood disorders, and co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.

Into Action Recovery Centers Opens New Facility

Into Action Recovery Centers (IARC) has announced a new 37-bed detox and residential treatment center in Webster, Texas. The new facility is adjacent to the organization’s existing 48-bed facility, and it marks IARC’s third expansion within the past 6 years.

With the launch of its new facility, IARC now has 85 inpatient beds, a 75-person-capacity outpatient center, and 40 sober living beds within the Clear Lake area of Texas. The launch of an additional program will add mental health services, medication management, and transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy beginning in 2024, the company said in a news release.

ARC Health Acquires Dayspring Behavioral Health

ARC Health, a Thurston Group portfolio company, announced recently that it has acquired Dayspring Behavioral Health, a mental health practice with 4 locations in the Seattle, Washington, area.

Founded in 2012, Dayspring offers comprehensive counseling services and specialized pediatric neuropsychological assessments. The program also has working relationships with local doctoral and master’s programs, providing internship and fellowship opportunities.

The deal between ARC Health and Dayspring was facilitated by Agenda Health, a mergers and acquisitions advisory firm based in Austin, Texas.

NABH Appoints Director of Congressional Affairs

The National Association for Behavioral Healthcare (NABH) recently appointed Andrew Dodson as its director of congressional affairs. Dodson has more than 20 years of legislative and regulatory advocacy experience in senior government affairs positions with several national trade groups, as well as a government affairs consulting firm. Most recently, Dodson led the American Wood Council’s federal, state, and local advocacy efforts.

Founded in 1933, NABH represents behavioral health provider systems that treat children, adolescents, adults, and older adults with mental health and substance use disorders in a variety of treatment settings in 49 states and Washington, D.C.

Tampa General, Lifepoint, USF Health Break Ground on Hospital

Tampa General Hospital (TGH), Lifepoint Behavioral Health, and USF Health have broken ground on TGH Behavioral Health Hospital, a 4-story facility in the Medical and Research District of Tampa, Florida. The hospital, which will have a capacity of 96 to 120 inpatient beds, is slated to open in late 2024.

As part of the joint venture, TGH will provide facility and medical support services, while Lifepoint manages day-to-day operations. Physicians with the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences in the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine will provide inpatient and outpatient care in specialized units for children, adolescents, and adults. Units will also be dedicated to treating patients with behavioral health issues and co-occurring medical conditions.

TGH Behavioral Health Hospital will also offer learning opportunities for USF medical students and resident physicians, and the facility will be linked to Tampa General’s Neuroscience Institute.

Steve Fund Names New CEO

The Steve Fund, a not-for-profit organization supporting the mental health of young people of color, has named David R. McGhee as its new CEO. McGhee joins the organization having most recently served as chief strategy and program officer for the Schultz Family Foundation. McGhee has also served as vice president of organizational excellence and impact at the Skillman Foundation.

McGhee will now lead the Steve Fund, which works with young people, families, colleges and universities, mental health leaders, researchers, employers, and other not-for-profit organizations to promote programs and strategies that develop understanding and assistance for the mental and emotional health of young people of color.
