U.S. prisons unable to meet mental health needs

More than 80 people with mental health problems have died as a result of abuse or neglect in U.S. jails since 2003, a BBC Panorama investigation finds.

With a severe shortage of mental healthcare providers, corrections facilities are overwhelmed. For example, in Cook County Jail in Chicago, of the 10,000 inmates, 3,000 are mentally ill. Prisons are poorly equipped to managed the care of those who need medication and counseling.
