Some anti-inflammatory medicines shown to benefit schizophrenia treatment

A new study shows that some treatments such as aspirin and estrogen can improve the efficacy of existing schizophrenia treatments.

Authors say the analysis, presented at the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology conference in Berlin, pulls together the data from 26 controlled trials and provides significant evidence that some (but not all) anti-inflammatory agents can improve symptoms of patients with schizophrenia.

Around 20 percent to 30 percent of patients don't respond to antipsychotic medicines, so adding anti-inflammatory agents could improve a patient's response to treatment, the authors say.
